Witch of Windsor 1579 London Witchcraft Pamphlet T-Shirt
The History of the Witch of Windsor
The imagery on the Witch of Windsor T-Shirt comes from a 1579 pamphlet on witchcraft called A Rehearsal both Strange and True. The book condemns the practice and tells the story of Elizabeth Stile, shown on this shirt as she feeds blood to her familiars.
Elizabeth Stile was a 65-year-old Windsor woman put on trial for witchcraft back in the 16th century. Stile was an oddball and outcast, and she seemed to enjoy her reputation. Neighbours described her as "leude, malitious, and hurtful".
Stories abound of her "evil doings" in the village. It's said she would curse anyone for a fee. This was in the time before witchcraft trials became fashionable, and people like Ms. Stile were generally tolerated. Unfortunately, she messed with the wrong man, and he made it his mission to see her punished.
Not one to go down alone, she accused three other women, and they were all sentenced to attend a church service. Shortly after, two of the women died, which obviously proved they were evil...reigniting the controversy.
After much back and forth, Ms. Stile eventually confessed to all manner of evil deeds and black arts - and locals were pleased as punch to corroborate her claims. She described how she and her accomplices would make red wax figures of people and prick them with thorns from a hawthorn tree until they died.
She and her accomplices were ultimately convicted of murder and sentenced to hanging on February 26th, 1579.
It's also interesting to note that the pamphlet this shirt is based on was one of many to come out during Elizabethan times, and these types of guides may have influenced the way Shakespeare portrayed witches in some of his plays.

The Witch of Windsor T-Shirt is custom made for you at the time of your order. As a result, we are unable to offer refunds or exchanges except in cases where the item is clearly defective. Because this item is printed based on a nearly 500-year-old manuscript, please note that pattern irregularities are almost definitely from the original document. In prepping the files for this design, we noted that some pages had traces of ink from other pages, and you may see faint evidence of that in the product. We thought it was much cooler to leave it the way it was rather than to touch up an old manuscript.
